Hey Terry,
How's it going? Still watching the TV for Olympic coverage and results? At my house, we are spending more and more time "glued to the TV." Do you like this expression? I think it's funny! It perfectly describes when we are watching TV very closely.
Last night we watched the Canadian men play baseball against China. It was nice to see Canada win, but I don't think China has a strong baseball history, so they had a hard time. We also watched the women's gymnastics and saw China beat the US. Finally, in the men's swimming relay, Canada had a chance to get a medal, but then our team ended up in 5th position. Oh well...maybe next week we'll get a medal. I just heard on the TV news that in the Olympics four years ago in Athens, Canada didn't get any medals in the first week either. I think we might have a better chance next week.
I see Korea got another medal yesterday (in shooting, wasn't it?) so now you are up to 13 medals. This is great! I've really enjoyed learning about the Korean athletes who are participating in the games. What events are you watching these days?
Can I give you a little suggestion about something you wrote earlier? It's really small, but still important. (By the way, did you see that you received a really nice compliment from someone reading this message board? Cool!) You wrote:
A bird told me that until this Beijing Olympics, Korea had always marked low at the start of the Games.
You used the idiom "a bird told me ..." But you missed one word. The expression is "a little bird told me..." Everyone can understand what you mean, so that's no problem. However, with most idioms, it's pretty important to include every word. If one is missed, the entire meaning will sometimes be lost.
I hope you're having a great day and enjoying your time away from school. Students here go back to school on September 2. How about you?
You are correct about L8R. Here's another one for you. This one is a little challenging, but I think you will enjoy this challenge. Do you know what this sign-off means?
L8RG8R,
Gwen
